16U Winston-Salem Spartans: 2026 Spring Season Opener Recap

The 16U Winston-Salem Spartans kicked off their 2026 Spring Season this past weekend, facing a slate of highly competitive and physically imposing opponents. While the tournament presented a challenging 1-2 start, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience, securing a hard-fought victory and gaining invaluable experience against older, more mature competition.

Ethan Williams particularly stood out as a 15-year-old sophomore playing up in the 16U division. While the box score only tells part of the story, Ethan's impact on the floor was undeniable: 




  • Defensive Presence: Consistently disrupted plays and provided high-energy perimeter defense.

  • Floor Generalship: Demonstrated high-IQ play execution with minimal turnovers.

  • Maturity: Showed the composure and physical toughness required to compete effectively against older athletes.

As the season progresses, Ethan continues to build the confidence necessary to match his high ceiling. His ability to handle the "nature of the game" at this level early on points toward a very promising future.  Navigating the 16U AAU landscape presents distinct challenges, particularly regarding the prevalent trend of older, reclassified athletes playing down a division. However, this past weekend, Ethan and the  NC Spartans (Coach Leak) proved they belong on the big stage. Facing older, physically imposing opponents, the squad demonstrated exceptional grit, reinforcing that elite competition accelerates player development. Bring on the challenge. Under Coach Leak’s leadership, the 16U Spartans delivered an impressive 2-1 record over their three-game slate beginning May 30. Most notably, the team secured a resilient victory while operating short-handed with only a five-man rotation—a testament to the program's conditioning and execution.
